When do we need to use the past tenses?

Hello , i have a simple question about past tenses, we should use past tenses when we talk something in the past , aside from this situation, when do we should use the past tenses?

It is used with the following adverbials of time : yesterday,a week(a month,year) ago,a few years ago,long ago,the ohter day,last year(Sunday,week),in 1978,in 1456,an hour later,a week later,once upon time etc. It happened long ago. The Past Simple is used to express facts in the Past.

Hi Edyguard.Welcome to this forum!The Past Simple denotes an action performed within a period of time which is over.The action is cut off from the present.It is used with the following adverbials of time :yesterday,a week(a month,year) ago,a few years ago,long ago,the ohter day,last year(Sunday,week),in 1978,in 1456,an hour later,a week later,once upon time etc.
