Hi

When do we have to spell out a number such as 'three' and when do we simply write it as a digit(s) like '34'? What is the rule that should be followed? Please let me know. Thank you.

There are no rules—just guidelines. In general, write one to ten as words (some will say one to nine; others will say one to twenty). Don't start a sentence with a numeral.

Don't start a sentence with a numeral. Write 'Thirty-three people were injured in the explosion.'

However, you can start a sentence with a year. '1998 was a very good year for Burgundy.'

In fiction, it is not unusual to see numbers up to ninety-nine written out. In general writing, like what we do here, I do up to nine or ten. If you just write out single-digit numbers, you will be OK. There are a million exceptions.

I never start a sentence with a numeral.
