When did they leave?

I see did they leave as a main clause, the interrogative phrase When as an adjunct modifying the main verb leave in the sentence above.

when is called an adverb phrase (AdvP) or, in more traditional terminology, an interrogative adverb. where? and how? are labeled thus as well.
