Is 'when' correct?
She is short in the modelling industry. When compared to people who don't model, she is tall.

"When compared to..." is correct.

"She is short in the modelling industry" is intelligible in the context but perhaps could be written more clearly, maybe as "She is short for someone in the modelling industry".

Could I ask if it is the same thing without when. Do you have a leaning? When he stands alone, is that okay with the sentence

He is a poor athlete (when) compared to Blake. He is a decent athlete when he stands alone, just not (when) compared to blake.

I could not find 'when compared to'.

I find all of these acceptable with or without "when". There may be slight biases for or against the inclusion of "when" depending on exact context, but these seem quite hard to identify or explain.

"individually" may be better than "when he stands alone".
