When choosing a job, the salary is the most important consideration. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Given elements of a great job, many people share a belief that the salary is the key consideration. From my point of view, despite the importance of pay rate, I suppose that several criteria should be given equal importance when landing a job.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that high wage plays a crucial part in job selection. People rely on the salary to survive not only themselves but also their families. In today's expensive world, people need money to pay for everything from education and healthcare to food and housing. If the salary cannot meet these expenses, all aspects of people’s life will be severely affected. Moreover, earning is proof of their contribution to the company and society. As salary is the final outcome of job performance, it can reveal the company’s appreciation of people's contribution and credit for their work. Obviously, salary can greatly affect people’s decision on their jobs.

On the other hand, wages cannot be the only consideration when taking up a job. One of the all-important factors of job choice should be passion and interest. According to research conducted at the University of Virginia, working with great interest can enable positive thinking, problem solving and creativity, which are scientifically proven to benefit work performance. Passion will trigger the desire for excellence, increase one’s contribution to work, and generate strong motivation, resulting in better performance at the workplace. Additionally, a healthy working environment should be given equal importance compared to a handsome salary. It is undoubtedly true that a person is unlikely to adhere to a highly paid yet uptight job in the long run. Suitable workplaces can be an ideal environment for a person to minimize their weaknesses and simultaneously showcase their strengths.

In conclusion, although high wages can influence occupational choices, I disagree that it outweighs other incentives like job interest and working environment.
