When can I take out 'about' from a sentence?

Such as 'I haven't a clue what it's saying'........is this ok?

I mean do I have to put in 'about' in between clue and what?

thanx

It's fine-- if not better-- without a 'but', JK. Other sentences will have to be looked at on a case-by-case basis.
