When and while

How do you use 'when' and 'while'?

I was doing my work when the fight broke out.

I was doing my work while my brother was busy playing video games.

Just when I thought that it was over, the fight started again.

While/When I was on my way home, ......?

Any ideas?

While is used when two things happen simaltaneously.

Example:She wa

In that case, do you have to use continuous tense for 'while'? (For both actions)

While replaces when and vice versa in some cases.

The teachers have done this assessment while/when were at the playgoround.

But when does not replace while in this sentence: She can go for a walk while he is asleep.

Here while is preferred and the actions are not in progressive (continuous) tense.
