when and as

which is correct .. or are they both correct !?
As she threw a glass of wine in his face he was shocked
or
When she threw a glass of wine in his face he was shocked

I thought so too but my student is asking me to explain why !!,,and i´m not sure that I can clearly define why "When" is better than "As" .......my student says that he has learnt that "As" could also be interpretted as " because " ( although i know we can´t start a sentence with "because " ...but can we start it with As ? )

"As" implies "during the time" It is more durative.
During the time he was throwing the wine into her face, she was shocked. That does not make much sense.

"When" implies an instant in time as well as a duration of time. That makes more sense considering that shock is a very sudden emotion.
