Hi, I think we can use the subjunctive (?) in the if-clause and make the "would" plus participle structure (?) for the tense in the main clause if the situation we are trying to describe is or was ongoing, as it was before and as it is now. But the sense I get is that this structure is selectively used. What can I do to use it correctly. I feel that people tend to use a type 3 conditional if a situation allows it (if you know what I am trying to say).
If I were rich (which I am not now and wasn't back then), I would have bought that Mercedes. If I had a lot of money (which I don't now and didn't back then), I would have bought that Mercedes.
