Hi,

I learned this the hard way. I think even the second is not exactly correct

When a boy nearly arrived at the shop, he saw a lady and a man holding a box with a heart sign for love [on it/the outside].

My ear may be deceiving me today, but I find almost and nearly anomalous with arrive.
As the boy [was entering / entered] the shop, he saw a lady and a man holding a box that had a heart printed on it.

What if he hadn't entered the shop? He had just reached the outside of the shop after a long walk. What would you say?

As the boy approached the shop
As the boy walked/came up to the shop

For some reason, I felt enter doesn't always mean to walk through the door of a shop. Is it possible to use enter when referring to walking into the compound of the shop? Note: You will still be at outside.

Yes. You can enter a place that has a roof or ceiling (the most common use) or you can enter a place that is a defined area (garden, yard, forest, cemetery, field, etc.) even when there's no roof or ceiling.
