When

Hi,

And there were changes. During the three days of inactivity, volunteers’ blood sugar levels spiked significantly after meals, with the peaks increasing by about 26 percent compared with when the volunteers were exercising and moving more. What’s more, the peaks grew slightly with each successive day.

Q1) Is "when" a fused relative word in this context?

Q2) What is the rationale behind using the fused relative construction here?

Q3) Is it possible to paraphrase it as follows?

During the three days of inactivity, volunteers’ blood sugar levels spiked significantly after meals, with the peaks increasing by about 26 percent compared with the days when the volunteers were exercising and moving more.

Q4) Does "the days" in the above paraphrase refer to the first half of the six-day exprimental period? (The context of this thread is the same as that of my last thread)

I'd appreciate your help.

Q3 - That paraphrase seems to work. Yes. "days" is of course more specific than "when".
Q4 - You are the one who wrote "days", so I assume you know what "days" refers to. I didn't pay very close attention to the details of your last thread - not close enough to know the answer here anyway. I

Thank you for the reply, CJ.

The experimental period is a total of six days. For the first three days, they were allowed to exercise as much as they like, but for the next three days, they were asked to make themselves inactive.(these facts were previously mentioned before this passage)

Could this information be enough for the use of "the days when" instead of "when"?
