"what've" contraction

Hi everybody,

I saw this form not so long ago. I'm just wondering how I could pronounce this contraction. Can I pronounce the SHORT FORM at all? I've seen interesting (for me), but proper, short form pronunciations (e.g. I'l , I've, who've) but I can't imagine how this "what've" should sound. The greater problem is that I can't find it in monolingual dictionaries. It was in 'English Vocabulary in Use - Upper Intermediate'. I just guess that this short form doesn't have a pronunciation. Maybe you have to pronounce the long form instead (in this particular case).

Thanks for your help in advance.

What've you done? Perfectly natural, and you just slide over what would have been the vowel, as it reduces to schwa.

What've = what of = /'w???v/

/?/ is a d-like sound. It's called a "flapped" (or "tapped") sound.

I think I may have mistakenly said 'flipped' in a recent post. If you come across it, feel free to edit it. Senior moments are mounting!

GCheng620a term for such "contracted words"
The term is simply "contractions".
GCheng620Could've
All contractions with 've are pronounced the same as the word "of" when preceded by a consonant. /?v/

could've, would've, should've, must've, ...

And as a single "v" when preceded by a vowel. /v/

GCheng620How did you edit peoples' words
I just clicked in the quotation box and moved things around where I wanted them and used the B, I, and U buttons as necessary. (I assume that's what you mean.)
