What/That/Which

Hi all

Which one is the proper word and why?

Roughly 100,000 years ago, during the last ice age, wolves migrated from Eurasia to the highlands of what/that/which is now Ethiopia.

I believe the answer is what.

"Wolves migrated from Eurasia to the highlands of what is now Ethiopia."

It is interesting to remember that "what" in that sentence = that which.

"...to the highlands of that which is now Ethiopia."

You could call it a phrase if you liked, but it's doesn't belong to one of the phrasal categories like noun phrase or verb phrase, so there's little point.
