What's your take on this question please?

Until China becomes the most powerful nation in the world, with Chinese spoken universally, ----.

A) the problems of wide variations in English may well be lessened
B) English will remain the primary language of science and diplomacy
C) many countries in the world have shifted to printing their scientific journals only in English
D) immigrants to the United States or Britain acquire English rapidly and well
E) people who speak English and another language have an advantage over those who speak only English

Can you please tell me what you think about this question. The correct answer is "B" but, I find the wording of the sentence a bit odd. Besides, "A" sounds equally correct, doesn' it?

HERE is the source of the original text out of which they made the question.

The rest of the world's countries have slowly shifted to printing their scientific journals only in English, in most cases not allowing publications in their own languages. Until China becomes the most powerful nation in the world and we are forced, all of us, to learn Chinese (provided the Chinese can decide which of their languages they will use), English will be the language of science and, of course, diplomacy.

It's a bit of a complex sentence. ' and see if that helps you understand the A-E suggestions in this context. Of course, the original also carries the idea that one day Chinese WILL take over - 'until' X happens.

It's a bit of a complex sentence.

Try thinking of the first part as 'Because Chinese is not widely spoken internationally....' and see if that helps you understand the A-E suggestions in this context.

Of course, the original also carries the idea that one day Chinese WILL take over - 'until' X happens. The sentence is saying that right now China is not the most powerful nation.

.
Kili, to me only B reads naturally-- until Chinese become universal, English will remain universal. There is no reason to be mentioning the problems of Englishes (as in A) since the assumed relationship is with Chinese-- A is not a very logical connection to the base clause, and that's what makes it sound odd to me.
