Speech & Pronunciation

What's wrong with the merriam-webster site?

Is it a mistake or just in American pronunciation people just speak it this way? BUT \'b?t\ . I think the word " but" should be read [b?t] both in British or American pronunciation, am I wrong?

Hi drinker, and welcome to English Forums. I don't know what that IPA sounds like, but the online M-W pronunciation sounded fine to these American ears.

Both pronunciations occur in both British and American English. The vowel is often weak in speech when there is no need to stress the conjunction.
