What's this sentence means?

Give an example of when you motivated others to achieve more than might have been the case without your contribution.

What's the underlined parts mean? Why is the wording so confusing?

In case you're wondering, thats the question from a job application form.

Thanks

The underlined portion means, "more than they would have achieved if you had not motivated them". In other words, imagine how much those people would have achieved without your motivation. Compare that to how much those people did achieve with your motivation.
