What's this mean with the asterisks?

I often see words enclosed in asterisks. What does this mean? Has anybody ever seen this used? Is this new?

Oh, my aching heart. sigh

I am really angry right now. cracking knuckles

In chat rooms and such, it's used to indicate an action instead of words. When a person sighs, it's just an output of breath. But if I write sigh you know I sighed.
