What's the word(s)/phrase?

to describe to act or behave in a way that is different than your true character because you do not want others to know your true character (without changing your own appearance).

E.g. He's pretty good at _____ himself as a heterosexual even though he is a gay men.

Thanks a million!

In the specific example you give I would use "presenting" or possibly "representing" but each situation is going to be different and so will possibly require a different word or expression.

presenting is simply to show yourself in a particular way, but I guess the word I'm looking for has a quality that not only he is showing himself in a particular way, he is showing a false image of himself in order to hide his true character because he does not want others to know, but thanks for the help :]

Perhaps "Pretending (to be)"

E.g.: "He's very good at pretending to be a heterosexual even though he's a gay."

Hope that helps.

Consider these words:

masquerade, deception, imposture.

I think masquerade is the best. Deception and imposture seem to have a malicious or exploiting intent. The person simply wants to hide his true character because he does not want others to know that he is gay and he is skilled at doing so.

Thanks y'all~ Thanks AlpheccaStars~

Hi,

You could say -

He's pretty good at passing himsef off as a heterosexual, even though he is a gay man.
