This is a really interesting question. ) The problem is that it's usually an alternative to closing the door completely, not an alternative to leaving the door all the way open, so it doesn't really fit the situation I think you're describing. )

This is a really interesting question. If someone is already in the process of closing the door, or planning to close the door, or offering to close the door, then the answer is easy -- you would say, "please leave the door ajar." ("ajar" is an odd word used only for a door that is not quite closed.) The problem is that it's usually an alternative to closing the door completely, not an
