What's the word for a word ...

What's the name for a word that has recently taken on a new meaning or sense? Examples would be "gay", or "surfing".
Is there such a name? If not, what would be a good one?

  • [/nq] If the new meaning is such that enough people forget there ever was an older meaning, to the extent that those holdouts who still use the word with its old meaning are thought to be using the new meaning, the word is "skunked"..

neologism. Which mostly refers to newly-coined words, but is also used for new usages of existing words. The AHD4 has this: "1. A new word, expression, or usage."
Adjective form is neologistic
