What's the verb/phrase? Please, could you help me?

Hi,

What verb or expression would you use to say that someone, now and again, makes an attempt to convince a person to change sides (like party affiliation, for example)?

And could you use “make advances to convince him etc.” or “make passes to convince him etc.”, too?

Also, if the subject of the argumentation is clear from the context, could you use simply "make advances at him"/"make passes at him", or are these phrases used exclusively in a situation of flirting or courtship?

Thank you.

"Persuasive argument" perhaps.

Make advances/passes are mostly used for flirting, they would need a very specific context otherwise.
