What's the proper gesture?

In western culture (say, in North America), when you are taken a picture of with a young man or a girl like 20, should you put your arm around the other's shoulder or just put your hands behind yourself and just stand closer a little bit? I am just very confused in such situations. Thanks!

It depends who they are and why the picture is being taken. If it is someone you have a personal/family relationship or good friendship with, you could put your arm around their shoulders. If it's with a work colleague, don't.

You can always wait to see what they do first if you are not sure...but if in doubt, don't touch.
