What's the meaning of "where" here?

Hi teachers,

I came across a passage about high and low register and stumble at this word "where" as in the following sentence:

But where the former brings to mind a hearth-and-home greeting, the latter brings to mind a much more formal affair.

I have never seen a "where" be used like this and am not sure about its function here. Could anyone kindly explain to me what this sentence is about? Thank you.
