What's the meaning of this sentence

(1) In ‘catch me off guard’, is the ‘off guard’ objective complement or adjective phrase that modifies ‘me’? (2) In ‘force some magic out of me’, what’s the meaning of ‘out of me’?

My Great Uncle Algie kept trying to catch me off guard and force some magic out of me - he pushed me off the end of Blackpool pier once, I nearly drowned - but nothing happened until I was eight.
