What's the meaning of "invoiced"?

Hi everyone,

I am really confused about the meaning of invoiced. Could you please help me better understand the word?

For example, "Tom will be invoiced $1000 upon return from holiday." Will Tom receive an invoice showing he has already paid $1000, or will he need to pay $1000?
