What's the meaning of 'gropes'?

The following sentence is in such situation as two people(they) are working at the restaurant.

They are unmarried couple.

And one of their friend who is also working in the same restaurant and their boss took a night off and thought about them.

Would they be sneaking in gropes and shots of espresso, giddy with their freedom?

I can't understand it, because I don't know the meaning of 'gropes' in the sentence.
Woudl you please let me know it?
