What’s the meaning of ‘but’ in the context?

By the time she [Laura] comes down all the others are ready.
“Heavens!” says Diana. “How much did that cost?”
Diana is startling in black and scarlet but on her petite form, inherited from their mother, the look works. Her lipstick is exactly the same red.
