What's the meaning of "as" here?

The following is from a Korean sports news on TV:

"And finishing things off in football, the Korean national football team begins their week long training session, as the team led by manager Uli Stielike, will leave to Jeju later today."

I was wondering if "as" here means "when" or "because".

Also, is it correct to say "leave to Jeju" instead of "leave for Jeju"?
(Jeju is the name of an island.)

From the sentence structure it appears to mean "because", but I question whether this makes complete sense. My feeling is that the sentence structure or logic is slightly faulty, and as a result it is not possible to be certain of the intended purpose of "as". "leave to Jeju" is wrong.

  • It should presumably be "leave for Jeju", as you suggest.
  • The comma after "Stielike" is also incorrect.

Thank you very much!

Let me tweak the sentence to make it more natural.

And finishing things off in football, the Korean national football team begins their week long training session, as the team led by manager Uli Stielike leaves for Jeju later today.

Does this sound any better?

If so, is the meaning of "as" still "because"?

It still feels uncertain to me. I think a more satisfactory way of saying it would be:

... the Korean national football team, led by manager Uli Stielike, leave for Jeju later today to begin their week long training session.
