What's the meaning

of get in to the mud with him? I have an idea, but just wanted to make sure.

"...You treat my mother with respect or you get a punch in the face and thrown out the front door until you can behave respectably. Barbarous, maybe, but if he's only responding in a thug-ish way, get in to the mud with him..."
