What's the meaning?

of spirit in the following?

"If I am in a major city and there is a thrift store or goodwill nearby I am pretty sure I could beat most teams by buying some rags to wear, rolling around in the dirt, and aggressively pan handling. Although, that might not be in the spirit of the competition."

My assumption was the real or intended meaning or purpose of something. Is it right?

Thanks a million!

You're correct!

This doesn't strike me as a competition with a rich, long-standing tradition. Unless I'm mistaken, the "rules" have just been contrived.

We often contrast the "spirit of the law" with the "letter of the law."

The spirit of the law is the original intention when it was written, and the letter of the law is the actual text, which, in some cases, could be interpreted in some way exactly opposite to the intent.

So the "spirit of the competition" is the original intention of the competition.
