What's the hurry? I thought we had plenty of time.

What's the hurry? I thought we had plenty of time. (Building Your Vocabulary, GEPT Elementary Level, Vol. I, page 168)

Why is it that the first sentence is in the present tense but the second sentence is in the past tense?
