What's The Function Of "As" In This Sentence?

Remember is considered a more positive word, learning with [understanding,

and having a lasting effect.

?

Memorize has connotations of something mechanical, robot-like, learning

without understanding, and not having as lasting of an effect.

I don't see why "as" exists in the sentence. Is it wrong if I delete it?

...learning [without understanding, and not having lasting of an effect]
