What's the difference between ''would be able to'' and ''could'' ?

IMHO, "would be able" only refers to the notion of ability (in the contitional):

- If he studied English, he would be able to understand you.

- If my wrist weren't in a cast, I would be able to help you put these boxes away.

Whereas "could" may also refer to a logical possibility:

- Don't go there, it could be dangerous!

Also, both forms appear in reported speech:

1. "Yes, I'll be able to come" =>

1a. He said he would be able to come.

2. "Yes, I can come" =>

2a. He said he could come.

The difference in meaning has already been shown above.
There is no difference in grammar. Both are modal verbs, and both occur in the same position in questions.
