What's the difference between whether and whether or not?

Can someone please explain me what's the difference between whether and wether or not? I would really appreciate.

It seems to me that sometimes "whether" and "whether or not" and interchangeable. g. I'm going alone whether you like it or not.

It seems to me that sometimes "whether" and "whether or not" and interchangeable.
However, "whether or not" is used to say that something is going to happen or is not going to happen irrespective of the situation, e.g. I'm going alone whether you like it or not.
