What's the difference between these two sentences ?

1. The warmth of the sunset pierced through my skin as I sat down on these clear sand.
2. The warmth of the sunset was piercing through my skin as I was sitting down on these clear sand.

What's the difference between these two ? Should I replace 'as' with 'while' in this case ? which one of it is correct ?

"These" isn't right for "sand."
Sand isn't usually clear.
