what's the difference between these sentences

1.what region of africa was first converted to islam by 700 c.e

2. Which region of ....

It seems to me that there are basically no difference between these two.
Is there any difference in the meanings? It would be highly appreciated if you let me know of it.

Thanks.

Gyeong-su Yim It seems to me that there are basically no difference between these two. I agree. Traditionally, 'which' is used when there are a limited number of choices, while 'what' is used for a large number of choices.
