Use solely when you want to accentuate exclusivity:

Etymology: 4sole + -ly
1 : without an associate (as a companion or assistant) : http://unabridged.

The Webster dictionary says they are synonymous.
Note that "solely" is an adverb while "only" can also be used as an adjective and conjunction.

"Solely" also has the meaning of "alone" or "single-handed".
