'although he is a socialist' gives a strong statement, which is then contrasted. (He is definitely a socialist)
'even if he is a socialist' indicates a sense of possible doubt (he could be a socialist, but the suggestion is that whether he is or is not, he doesn't sympathise with the working class). It is more of a modifier than a direct contrast.
