'Buy/bought' are necessary when followed by an indirect object. 'Purchase/purchased' wouldn't work in the following:

'Let me buy you a drink'.
'******* bought Maria a bunch of daffodils'.
'He bought the vicar of St Hilda's a new Bible.'
'What shall we buy Mum for Christmas?'
