What's the difference between 'affair' and 'event'?

Looking only at the definitions that might readily be confused, an event is something that happens at a specific place and time.
An affair is a kind of social event, such as a party.
For example, a political rally would be an event but not an affair. Someone's graduation celebration might well be both.
