What's the difference between #1 and #2?

#1. I am grateful to him.
#2. I am grateful for him.
-----------------------------------------
I read about the difference of nuancee of them in a grammer book on Preposition written by my native language.
But I can't see what it means.
so I'd like to know the fact about the difference between to and for by the English Native speaker.
If you could show example situations, I hop you would do it.
Thanks for reading.

I'm not a native speaker, but here's how I see the difference between the two prepositions. In the first sentence, your thanks are directed to him and you basically want to thank him for what he's done for you. In the second, you don't want to thank him but rather he's the reason you are grateful/thankful for.

  • The second sentence might suggest, for example, that you are grateful to *** for him.

You may think of 'grateful' like this: grateful to someone for something/someone. You may omit the to-phrase or the for-phrase.

I am grateful to Mary for the birthday gift she gave me.
I am grateful to Mary.
I am grateful for the bi
