What's the difference?

1) If I hadn't said anything, my parents wouldn't know anything about it.
2) If I hadn't said anything, my parents wouldn't have known anything about it.

What's the difference between the two? Would 1 be correct if I was talking about something that happened in the distant past and my parents knowing about it is not relative any longer?
