whats the difference ?

hello teachers. whats the difference ? when we add a preposition to the verb and it gives the same meaning ( not phrasal verbs ) like drink and drink up
beat and beat up.. they both have the same meaning.. whats the point in adding a preposition ? English speakers do this a lot in other words
