What's the deal with fun?

A friend writes "it is so fun to see....." Every time I see fun used like this, it seems there should be "much" in front of it. My head tells me its wrong to leave out the "much" but I don't know why. Help.

I think it's because "fun" doesn't naturally want to be an adjective when it's used after the noun. For example, "a fun day out" seems fine (adjectival "fun"),* but in "the day out was fun" I perceive "fun" to be a noun. ".

  • Therefore "It is so fun to see", which requires "fun" to be an adjective, sounds strange (well, it does to me and you, though obviously not to everyone).
  • *Edit: Actually, I'm not sure if (to me) "fun" is truly an adjective even here.
