What's the best way to learn Vocabulary words?

While I am reading, I have  trouble with some words. Usually like 1-2 word every page or every other page. I am pleased that I know most words. ^^ Should I disregard them, or? What would you do if you didn't understand a word?

Thanks. I actually do that.

I use my iphone, which I have a good dictionary installed.

I can save a word, or it will be saved automatically in history section. My vocabulary improved significantly. As of now, I am learning how to use them for essay. I don't need to use strong words in person, because most people don't know. He he... As long as I understand them when someone speaks to me, I am happy.

Thank you for your prompt reply and for confirming that an electronic dictionary can really give language learning a solid and much needed boost!

As far as languages are concerned American English is my Mother Tongue and then the first foreign language I studied was French (while living in France with my parents), then Italian (because I have been living and working in Italy as an ESL teacher for some few years now) and currently I am learning Spanish because it is so similiar to Italian and because I have several online students from Spain and South America. I also speak some Hindi due to my spiritual interests in Eastern philosophy and spiritual paths such as Bhati Yoga! Ok....enough said! : )

Sorry, I have to go now. I have another online lesson with a student in a few minutes! Duty calls! : )

I think, it is normal thing to come across thorugh new words, since writer is usning different synonyms for the word which you might have known already... so follow the dictionary and it will add more words to your memo box.

Building your vocabulary is a never ending process. you should constantly learn new words.

Thanks for asking this question. It's great that you can only find one or two words in a page or two. Yes that really means that you already have good vocabulary (atleast the comprehension part). Even though I am sure that most of the word that you don't know the meaning of, wouldn't have much effect in you understanding what you are reading. I am sure that you can make out the context. But if it is not inconvenient for you then you can look up words in a dictionary. If you are reading on a mobile device then you can easily find a lot of apps that can make the job easier for you. If you are reading a paper book then you can still use any dictionary help that can not only help you with the meaning of the new words but also with the pronunciation.

Most people wouldn't even bother to ask this question. So, first of all congrats that you are serious about developing your vocabulary. Remember, understanding the meanings of words is only the first step. We can also easily improve the usage of these words. What I mean by that is you should pick a word a day and start using it as much as possible in your written and spoken English. The more you will use the word, you will notice that the more you will remember them and you will use them.
