What's right with the grammar of this sentence?

"I had a buddy tell me that ..."

Is he no longer a buddy?

why "tell" instead of "tells"?

Thanks for answering.

He may or may not still be a buddy. 'Tell' is an infinitive; the finite verb is 'had'.
