What's philia?

My friend told me he's an atheist with staurophilia.

He doesn't even believe in crucifixion but he still loves cross as an aesthetic.

However what is the distinction between loving something and having philia of it?

"Philia" usually implies an obsessive attraction to something. If unchecked, it can lead to an unhealthy mental condition.
