What's on the road ahead?

Hi can anyone tell me if it's correct to say "What's on the road ahead" when I go hiking and want to make sure if there's anything special up ahead?

If the sentence doesn't sound correct or natural then what should I ask?

Thank you very much

It's okay. Don't forget the question mark.

You could also say, "What's the road like up ahead?"

OR "Is there any activity on the road up ahead?"

(depending on what you really want to know - is it steep, narrow, winding? is it washed out?)

I don't think I'd use 'road' unless I was hiking on one, or at least on wheel ruts. I'd say 'What's on the path/trail ahead?'
