What's "hard knocks" mean?

Can I say "My life is full of hard knocks" to mean life is tough? Can I say "My childhood was full of hard knocks" to mean my childhood was full of hardships? Can I even say "Living with my roommates is full of hard knocks" to mean it's difficult to live with my roommates?

I don't see why not. The phrase isn't used a lot any more, but it still carries "a punch". Some like to say that they've graduated from the "school of hard knocks".
