What's difference between "a little girl" and "a small girl"

Does a "small girl" refer to a girl that is very young or very small in her body size?

How about a little girl? Does it only refer to a young kid?

By the grammar I have learnt, a little girl should be incorrect but no, I know a lot of people saying this.

Well, a very famous British poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, wrote about his little girl in a rhyme. This little ditty is very well known.

There was a little girl
Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was very very good
